Man vanishes after widow's death
Johannesburg - Police are searching for a Nigerian man after an Australian great-grandmother was found dead under suspicious circumstances in her Johannesburg guesthouse in early February.
Her young Nigerian lover, Orowo Omokoh, 28, has gone missing along with all of her money, credit cards, jewellery, laptop and other personal items, reported Beeld.
Jette Jacobs, 67, apparently came to SA in November 2012 to marry Omokoh, whom she had met on an online dating site two years earlier.
Omokoh was the last person to see Jacobs alive and reported her missing to police, after which he disappeared.
Alan Hynd of the Australian department of trade’s consumer protection department said Jacobs was a widow who was apparently very lonely after her husband’s death in 2002.
Then she met Omokoh online and transferred more than Aus$100 000 to his bank account in Nigeria, transferring the same amount to another man, known only as Isaac, whom she also met on the website.
She flew to South Africa in 2010 to meet Omokoh and last year he asked her to marry him.
Despite her children warning her against the man, she was convinced that she would begin a new life with her new love, said Hynd.
She sold her house before leaving Australia. In South Africa she transferred another Aus$20 000 to supposedly help Omokoh with his visa problems.
But an Australian fraud unit had proof that Omokoh only arrived in South Africa two days before Jacobs’s death.
A letter was sent to Jacobs to warn her that she might have fallen victim to a scam but the letter was delivered after she had already left for Johannesburg.
Hynd said Jacobs’s family said Omokoh wanted to live with their mother in Australia after the wedding but she was apparently keen on living in Nigeria.
