FG assists Kano State with measles vaccines
Kano - The Federal Government has donated vaccines to the Kano State Government to tackle the outbreak of measles in its territory, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Abubakar Labaran, said on Tuesday.
The commissioner made the information known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano, adding that three persons died out of more than 800 children affected by the disease.
"So far, 800 children were affected and we have three mortalities.
"And if you look at the trend, you will see that most of those affected were the metropolitan local governments, which is because of high population density and interaction among the children," Labaran said.
He said the disease was airborne and could be easily inhaled when an infected child spat or sneezed.
The commissioner said the disease had no cure but could be prevented.
He said the state government had already provided 39 000 dozes of the vaccines, apart from other drugs provided to rescue the affected children.
Labaran urged parents to immunise their wards against the seven killer diseases, saying that the state government had provided designated vaccination health centres close to them.
Some of the affected local government areas are Dala, Gwale, Fagge, Madobi, Tsanyawa, Kumbotso, Municipal, Karaye and Tarauni.
