Attack on police station, 10 dead
Accra - At least two policemen and eight civilians were killed in an attack on a police station in Borno state, a stronghold of the Boko Haram Islamist group, local media reported on Tuesday.
Boko Haram gunmen attacked the police station in Gwoza town late on Monday, according to Nigerian Vanguard newspaper, and clashes followed.
Gwoza lies near the Cameroonian border, about 135km south-east the state capital Maiduguri, a Boko Haram stronghold.
The attack came a day after Nigerian security forces killed 20 suspected Boko Haram militants who had attacked army barracks in Munguno, which also lies in Borno state.
The Islamist group has been waging an insurgency in Africa's most populous nation since 2010.
More than 1 400 people have died in attacks attributed to the group, which opposes Western education and culture and is seeking to establish shari'ah law.
The group was also suspected to be behind the kidnapping of a French family in February. Three adults and four children were kidnapped by armed men from Cameroon's far north, close to the Nigerian border.
