Lindsay Lohan's dad worries she'll die

Los Angeles - Lindsay Lohan's father is terrified she will be dead within a year. Michael Lohan - who has repeatedly insisted his 26-year-old daughter needs help for drink and drug abuse problems - admits he is constantly expecting to hear the worst about the actress and is convinced she will "overdose" if she doesn't get clean. Speaking of British singer Amy Winehouse, who died aged 27 in July 2011, he said: "I hate to refer to Amy Winehouse, but she was so talented and wouldn't listen either, then she passed away. "I don't want that to happen to my daughter. Lindsay turns 27 in July. How many other kids have died at that age of overdoses? It's a fear that sticks in my head. I'm always sitting by my phone." 'I feel I'm to blame' Michael blames himself for Lindsay's problems as he thinks her difficulties began after he divorced her mother Dina in 2007, the same year she was arrested twice and went to rehab three times. He said: "It went wrong for Lindsay when I got divorced from Dina, so of course I feel I'm to blame. "I look at pictures of when she was 18, just before my divorce and when she filmed Mean Girls, then I look at photos from each year after that and they tell a sad story." And the showbiz patriarch says he was "heartbroken" seeing how fragile Lindsay looked when she appeared in court last week. He added to more! magazine: "Seeing her like that was horrible. I was heartbroken. When I held her in the hotel room, right after court, it's not the same Lindsay I used to hold. She's just not all there."

Kim wants to go Easton, not North West

Los Angeles - Kim Kardashian wants to name her baby Easton West. The reality TV star - who is expecting her and boyfriend Kanye West's first child in July - shot down speculation the couple are planning to call their little one North, but admitted they have drawn up a shortlist of potential monikers and she is hoping the rapper will allow her to call their kid Easton West. When asked about plans to name the couple's baby North, she replied: ''That is not true. That is not one of the names on our list. But you know what name I do like? But it probably won't be on [the list]. "Cause it kinda goes with North, I like Easton. Easton West. I think that's cute.'' Following the revelation she was immediately asked whether she is expecting a boy, but insisted Easton West would be a suitable name whatever the sex of their child. Speaking on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Thursday night, she added: ''Boys names are good for girls. We have a list and some of them are 'K' names some of them aren't.'' The 32-year-old beauty revealed she told her mother Kris Jenner and sister Kourtney Kardashian about her pregnancy before letting her other sibling Khloe Kardashian in on the news because she was ''nervous'' about telling the 28-year-old star, who has struggled to conceive in the past three years. She explained: ''I had Kourtney come with me to tell Khloe 'cause I was a little nervous. ''Because I know she really really really wants a baby. So I felt like I'm gonna need some moral support to tell her. "And she was so happy! But I was really nervous to tell her. And she kind of got mad that I was nervous, [she] thought it was ridiculous.''

Nicki Minaj's 'strange' AI realisation

Los Angeles - Nicki Minaj didn't realise she was "a bit strange" until she worked on American Idol. The Starships hitmaker has been bemused by the odd reactions to some of the comments she has made as a judge on the show, insisting she is exactly the same on the panel as she is in real life. "I guess I didn't realise that maybe I am a bit strange because, like the way people react to what I say to the contestants. It's like, that's really how I act, but people think it's kind of strange," she recently admitted during an interview. Doing a 'spectacular' job "Like when I asked Kree [Harrison] to marry me, I didn't think that was strange but I guess looking back at it now, maybe no Idol judge has ever asked a contestant to marry them on live TV. I guess in general I'm just surprised at the way people react to things that I see as very normal." Nicki is enjoying working on the judging panel - on which she is joined by Keith Urban, Mariah Carey and Randy Jackson - and thinks she is doing a "spectacular" job. Asked for her best and worst moments so far, she said: "I don't have a worst Idol moment. I've been spectacular. Yes, I'm going to toot my own horn. And then, my best moment is every single moment, I'll toot it again."

Pope appeals for peace

Vatican City - Pope Francis used his first Easter Sunday address to call for peace in the world and appealed for a diplomatic solution to the crisis on the Korean peninsula. In his first "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and the world) message, Francis also called for peace between Israelis and Palestinians, an end to the civil war in Syria, and political solutions to conflicts in several African countries. The former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio of Argentina, who has made defence of nature an early hallmark of his pontificate, also condemned the "iniquitous exploitation of natural resources" and urged everyone to be "guardians" of creation. Francis delivered his message from the central balcony of St Peter's Basilica - the same spot from where he first appeared to the world as pope after his election on 13 March - to a crowd estimated by the Vatican at at least 250 000 people. "Peace in Asia, above all on the Korean peninsula: may disagreements be overcome and a renewed spirit of reconciliation grow," he said, speaking in Italian. State of war North Korea said on Saturday it was entering a "state of war" with South Korea. Tensions have been high since the North's new young leader Kim Jong-un ordered a third nuclear weapons test in February, breaching UN sanctions and ignoring warnings from North Korea's sole major ally, China, not to do so. Francis, who has brought a more simple and personal style to the papacy, said the message of Easter is that faith can help people transform their lives by letting "those desert places in our hearts bloom". "How many deserts, even today, do human beings need to cross! Above all, the desert within, when we have no love for God or neighbour, when we fail to realise that we are guardians of all that the creator has given us and continues to give us," he said. Earlier, at a Mass in a square bedecked by more than 40 000 plants and flowers, the pope wore relatively simple white vestments, as opposed to his predecessor Benedict, who preferred more elaborate robes. The huge crowd spilled out of St Peter's Square and into surrounding streets and included many who had come to see a pope they hope could give a new start to a Church that has been marred by scandals involving sexual abuse of children and allegations of corruption. "It's a new pope and new beginning," said Tina Hughes, 67, who came to Rome with her family from Nottingham, England to see the pope. "I think he brings something special. He connects with people. I feel good about him." Message of peace Francis, who took his name in honour of St Francis of Assisi, who is revered as a symbol of austerity and the importance of the natural world, said: "Peace in the whole world, still divided by greed looking for easy gain, wounded by the selfishness which threatens human life and the family, selfishness that continues in human trafficking, the most extensive form of slavery in this 21st century. "Peace to the whole world, torn apart by violence linked to drug trafficking and by the iniquitous exploitation of natural resources! Peace to this our Earth! May the risen Jesus bring comfort to the victims of natural disasters and make us responsible guardians of creation." Easter Sunday, the day Christians believe Jesus was resurrected from the dead three days after his crucifixion, was the culmination of four hectic days of activity for the pope, during which he instituted several novelties. On Holy Thursday, two women were included among the 12 people whose feet he washed and kissed during a traditional ceremony that had previously been open only to men. Francis is still living in the same Vatican guesthouse where he stayed during the conclave that elected him the first non-European pope in 1 300 years, instead of moving into the regal papal apartments in the Vatican's Apostolic Palace. He has also been inviting ordinary people to his morning Mass at the guesthouse, including Vatican street sweepers and gardeners.

4 Work Mistakes You Don’t Realize You’re Making

When you’re the new girl at work, you do everything in your power to stay on your best behavior. You show up to the office early, leave late, dress conservatively, and absolutely never, ever check your Facebook page from your work computer. But, as the weeks go by, it’s easy to slide into a sense of comfort and let your guard down, following in the footsteps of your co-workers (who know just how far they can bend the rules). And soon, you’re missing deadlines, tweeting covertly, making excuses as to why you’re not as productive as before, and in general, setting yourself up for a not-so-great performance review. So what happened? Well, it’s simple—you forgot the basics. If you’re looking for a way to get back into gear, revisit the advice you got when you were first starting out in the professional world, and follow these easy (but often ignored) bits of advice.   1. Stop Using Excuses Just like your puppy dog eyes didn’t work to convince your 8th grade teacher that your little sister threw away your math homework, excuses don’t go very far with your boss. And no matter how genuine your intentions are (“but I had so much on my plate—and then I came down with the flu!”), all your manager will hear is that you don’t use your time effectively. So here’s a no-fail way to impress your boss: Do what she says. When you have an assignment, don’t make her remind you about it, and don’t ask for an extension. If you have questions, ask them well before the deadline, and if you need help from teams in other departments, engage them with time to spare. Do quality work and turn it in on time. By completing your work without excuses or constant reminders, you’ll gain your boss’ immediate trust and respect, and you’ll be well on your way to gaining more responsibility—or even a promotion.   2. Show up on Time You may think it’s endearing to be labeled the “late one,” who never seems to make it to a meeting before the fifth PowerPoint slide. So you laugh and give a little shoulder shrug as you noisily bustle into the conference room, assuming that everyone just writes it off as, “Oh, that Suzie.” Well, it’s not cute. And no matter how much you feel it’s a part of who you are, lateness is not an inherent trait—so excuses along the line of, “I can’t help it!” won’t work. If you’re serious about your job and impressing your team and boss, make it a point to show up on time—or better yet, early. Whatever it takes (e.g., an extra alarm, a working coffee pot, a puppy who needs attention at 5 AM), make it happen. It’s worth it.   3. Return Emails When our communication is so readily at our fingertips, there’s no excuse for leaving your email unanswered for more than a day or two. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve written an inter-department email to get no response. Not in one week, not in two—never. So, it’s no surprise that you’ll earn instant respect from your entire team (and anyone else who contacts you) if you answer emails in a timely manner. Don’t know the answer? That’s no excuse to leave the email sitting in your inbox. Write a quick response anyway: “Hi Jan, I’m not 100% sure about this, so let me look into it, and I will get back to you by the end of the week.” Then, get back to her before the end of the week. I know—we’re all busy. And I’m not saying you need to answer every email the moment it arrives in your inbox (that’s certainly not an efficient way to work). But when you ignore an email, what you’re conveying to the sender is: “You’re not important enough to warrant a response.”   4. Follow Through As a new manager in an unfamiliar industry, I don’t always know the answers to my employees’ questions. But instead of just having them ask someone else, I let them know that I’ll find out and get back to them. And then, I follow through. Each time I’m able to deliver an answer, I’m conveying that I do what I say I’m going to do—and my employees grow to trust me more and more. Of course, this doesn’t just apply to answering questions. If you tell a co-worker you’ll proofread her report, don’t push it off until she reminds you about it two weeks later. If you assure your team that you’ll take care of an important client’s account, don’t let it sit on the bottom of your to-do list until one of your co-workers has the customer on the phone, screaming because she hasn’t heard from anyone in over a week. If you make a commitment, follow through—you’ll convey that you can be trusted with anything.   Easy tips, right? Well, tell yourself that a few months into your new job, when you realize your boss usually forgets about the deadlines he gives you, and nothing bad ever happens when you forget to answer an email or two. But don’t fall into that trap! Go back to this basic advice and you’ll never fail to impress your team, clients, and boss. Recommended by Oluwaseyi Say hi to oluwaseyi on twitter @seyenzo

TASUED remains Ogun owned institution - Registrar

Ogun - The Management of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu-Ode, Ogun, has debunked a media report that government has delisted the university as one of the state owned institutions. This is contained in a statement signed by the university registrar, Femi Kayode on Monday in Ijebu-Ode. Kayode said that the media report was a deliberate attempt to cause disaffection between the institution and the state government, as well as mislead the general public on the status of the institution. The registrar said that the institution was still being funded and maintained by the state government. He blamed the author of the said report for not authenticating the it  before publishing. ``A mere omission of name from the diary was used as a basis for such a generalised statement to the public,’’ he said. According to him, the state government till date, carries out its responsibilities on the school in the area of management and funding,  and the school is still in existence. Kayode specifically cited the recent approval given the institution by Gov. Ibikunle Amosun to access the Tertiary Institution Fund (TETFUND) as proof that the university still existed. ``The university under the new leadership currently enjoys a very productive and supportive assistance from the state government. ``The university, however, enjoins the general public to resist the temptation of being miss-informed through a mischievous report. ``The institution till date continues to exist and enjoys the support of the state government,’’ he said.

EFCC arraigns Atuche

Ikeja -  The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday arraigned a former Managing Director of Bank PHB, Francis Atuche, over alleged forgery. Atuche was charged before Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo of an Ikeja High Court on nine count charges of forgery. He was arraigned alongside two employees of the Central Shared Services Centre of Keystone Bank Ltd., Joachim Nnosiri and Uguru Onyike. EFCC counsel, Ben Ubi alleged that the accused had on March 4, in Lagos, forged board resolutions, purportedly emanating from Futureview Securities Ltd.,Tradjeck Ltd. and Extra Oil Ltd. Ubi said the board resolutions were said to have been duly signed by the Managing Director of the three companies, Mrs Elizabeth Ebi and addressed to Keystone Bank. He said the forged board resolutions, was the request of a N10.9 billion credit facility from the bank. According to him, Nnosiri and Onyike, acting on behalf of Atuche, had attempted to smuggle the board resolutions into Keystone Bank headquarters in Victoria Island, Lagos. Ubi said the documents were allegedly forged by the accused persons to weaken EFCC's case against Atuche in another criminal matter that alleged he granted hoax loans to the companies. He said the offence contravened Sections 361 and 409 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2011. The accused all pleaded not guilty to the charges. Counsel to the accused, Tayo Oyetibo (SAN), Clement Onwuenwunor and Bamidele Adewunmi, urged the court to grant them bail on liberal terms. Ubi told the court that he was served the bail applications in court and needed time to  respond. The judge, therefore, directed the accused to go home and come back for arguments on their bail applications. He, then, fixed Wednesday, March 27, for hearing of Atuche's application for bail while those of the other two accused would be heard on March 28. NAN recalls that Atuche is standing trial in two other cases before the Ikeja High Court. He is being prosecuted alongside his wife, Elizabeth Atuche and a former Chief Financial Officer of Bank PHB, Ugo Anyanwu, before Justice Lateefat Okunnu. The EFCC alleged that Atuche and his co-accused had allegedly stolen N25.7 billion, belonging to the bank, through the granting of hoax loans, including the N10.9 billion transaction. The former bank chief is also being tried before Onigbanjo for allegedly conspiring with two former directors, Funmi Ademosun and Lekan Kasali, to steal N4.2 billion and N7.2 billion from the bank.

MTV Video Music Awards moving to Brooklyn

Los Angeles - The annual MTV Video Music Awards, one of the highlights of the pop music calendar, will head to Brooklyn this summer after a two-year stint in Los Angeles, the US cable channel said on Monday. The Video Music Awards will be the first major annual awards show to take place in the New York borough, which has seen its cultural profile rise over the past decade as a fashionable spot for young musicians and filmmakers. "From a vibrant musical scene for up and coming artists to epic concerts by today's biggest stars and the triumphant return of pro sports to the borough after nearly 60 years, Brooklyn has re-emerged as a cultural capital where music, sports and entertainment history is made every day," MTV President Stephen Friedman said in a statement. Unscripted moments The event will air live at the Barclays Centre arena on 25 August. A host has yet to be announced. The awards show, which hands out "Moonman" statuettes of an astronaut planting an MTV flag, has taken place in Los Angeles for the past two years, often alternating runs with venues in Manhattan. MTV, whose programming now focuses on reality series over its original music video format, will celebrate the award show's 30th anniversary. The Video Music Awards began in 1984 and helped propel the young cable channel as a player in the entertainment industry. The annual awards ceremony is known for unscripted moments, such as in 2009 when rapper Kanye West crashed country-pop singer Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for Best Female Video to proclaim that singer Beyoncé was more deserving of the trophy.

Kim Kardashian avoiding maternity wear

Los Angeles - Kim Kardashian is avoiding maternity clothes. The 32-year-old star - who is due to give birth to her and Kanye West's first child in July - has accepted her changing shape but isn't ready to ditch her signature short, tight dresses just yet. A source told Us Weekly magazine: "She's just not a maternity girl, but she's finally accepting her body and getting more comfortable. She doesn't feel sexy but she's feels feminine. She's glowing." Kim recently admitted she is struggling to get dressed every day as she has put on weight everywhere except her stomach and is tired of trying to conceal her pregnancy curves. 'Dressing the bump' She said: "For me, I've found that I've gained inches and I've gotten wider but my belly hasn't popped yet, so I struggle finding things that don't make me look heavy. "Some days my baby bump really shows, and some days it doesn't...so I never really know what I'm going to look like. "At this stage, I guess I'm more focused on concealing the weight gain than I am about dressing the bump, just because it hasn't popped yet. "Once I start showing more, I'll be all about showing off my bump, and I can't wait!" The Kourtney & Kim Take Miami star loves being pregnant as it has enabled her to shop for a whole new wardrobe. She said: "I'm definitely having a lot of fun with my maternity fashion. [I] love trying new things."

Rihanna makes fans wait over 4 hours

Los Angeles - Rihanna kept 2 500 high school students waiting for four-and-a-half hours. The Stay singer has come under fire for appearing at Barrington High School in Chicago extremely late and staying just 16 minutes after the school won a competition, sponsored by her, by producing a video highlighting their charity work and using her hit song Diamonds as the soundtrack. According to The Chicago Tribune the 25-year-old star was supposed to be at the school at 13:00 on Thursday last week, but she didn't turn up until well after 17:00. The students were allegedly forced to wait inside a small gym until she arrived. Rihanna suggested traffic was the reason for her lengthy delay, as she tweeted on her way to the event: ''This Chicago traffic is not working.'' But she allegedly made no apology or gave any explanation for her lateness upon arriving at the school and simply told the students: ''Thanks you guys for coming and waiting.'' However, she gave out some free tickets to her show. Patricia Halle was one of number of students to complain, saying: ''It's one thing to be fashionably late. This is just rude. Our lives don't revolve around a pop star. Our school worked hard to win this. She should be more respectful.'' After leaving the event, Rihanna tweeted her support for the school, writing: ''Barrington High School (BHS) Facts. They raised 40 thousand dollars for Joplin Missouri after the tragic tornado hit Missouri in May last year ''#BHS #facts they participated in the relay for life for the American Cancer Society and raised $700,000 ''#BHS thank you man!!! You guys RULE!!! I love this school!!! (sic)'' The star was also previously unapologetic when she made fans wait two hours for her to grace the stage on her Diamonds world tour in Montreal, Canada, on 18 March, because she was still suffering from laryngitis, which forced her to cancel two other shows.

‘Why I Fought Patience Ozokwor’ – Mercy Johnson

Actress Mercy Johnson who was reportedly in a showdown with her older colleague, Patience Ozokwor on location in Asaba few weeks back, has blamed her uncontrollable outburst on Ozokwor’s repeated utterances referring to her as an ‘ashawo’- a hoochie. In a telephone interview, Mercy recounted her side of the story to NET. She noted that Patience Ozokwor was given a revealing clothe to wear on that location, apparently to depict a character in the movie that was in the making and Patience allegedly refused the outfit, stating that she is not Mercy Johnson, not an ‘ashawo’. “I’m not a prostitute. I don’t like the name. I told her I didn’t like it”, Mercy told NET. According to her, the faceoff was escalated when Mama Gee refused to stop calling her by unpleasant name. There were unconfirmed reports that the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) might take a disciplinary action against Mercy Johnson and Patience Ozokwor but when NET contacted the AGN president, Segun Arinze via SMS, he simply stated that the issue has been sorted out in-house. The text message read “Hello sir, I just want to know if the AGN is taking any disciplinary action against Mercy Johnson and Patience Ozokwor”. “No it’s sorted out. Thanks”, he replied. Arinze would not comment further. Arinze, sources said, has instructed both parties not to make any further comments on the matter.

My Romance With MI - Waje Finally Opens Up

Talented singer, Waje finally opens up about her romance with MI. In a recent interview with Waje , when asked about the rumour about dating MI, read what she had to say below. There is this rumour about you and MI- Me and MI are best friends, that is all. Tell us about this friendship There is nothing to say about it really. We first met when I was in Enugu and he came for a show. When we met in Lagos, we hooked up and we have been doing stuff together musically. He is somebody who is very passionate about his music and I like him for that. Where is the rumour of an affair between the two of you emanating from, even Olamide mentioned it in his song? I think it is just what you media guys started. We are just friends, and maybe you guys wanted a Nigerian version of Jay Z and Beyonce, so they just hooked us up by themselves. Don’t you think MI likes you? I saw his Tweet where MI complained that you had “brother zoned” him. (laughs) Leave him a beg, he is not serious, we are just friends. Even if we are dating, is it something I would tell the world?

Justin Bieber castration plot 'is still on', says maniac

Los Angeles - A man at the centre of a plot to murder Justin Bieber says his plan is "still on". Dana Martin - who is serving two life sentences for raping and killing a 15-year-old girl - conspired with a hit man to kidnap and castrate the singer, but the star was spared after he let slip his intentions to a prison warden. However, Dana has vowed to continue targeting the Never Say Never hitmaker, saying: "It's still on. This isn't going away. Do you really think that I would stop?" Martin - who is currently in solitary confinement while his repeated threats against the star are investigated - says he targeted Justin because he "changed". 'I shaved it for you' He told Details magazine: "It's because he changed, that made me angry." During the interview, the inmate showed off a tattoo he has of 19-year-old Justin on his calf. He said: "I shaved it for you... I always tell people you need to have a shaved Bieber. Believe me, you do not want a hairy Bieber." Phone calls of Martin discussing details of the murder plot with his accomplices were recently made public. The plan was to strike in New York when Justin was performing at Madison Square Garden venue and strangle the teen idol with a paisley tie, but only after removing his genitals with garden shears.

Rihanna granted 3 year restraining order

Los Angeles - Rihanna has obtained a three-year restraining order against an obsessed fan. The Stay singer - who is currently on her Diamond world tour - secured legal protection against Steveland Barrow, who was arrested in February after breaking into the property next to her Los Angeles home, which he mistook for the 25-year-old popstar's house. According to TMZ Barrow has been ordered to stay at least 91m away from Rihanna for the next three years. In her request for the restraining order, Rihanna revealed she feared for her safety after the male fan told police officers that he was invited to her home and allegedly slept in a bed, which he wrongly believed to be hers. He also stole some items from the house. 'He's paid his dues' Rihanna previously had a restraining order against her on/off boyfriend Chris Brown after he beat her in 2009. The couple reunited late last year and she recently opened up about why she decided to give their relationship another chance. She said: "Of course everybody has their opinion about him, because of what he's done. That will always be there. But he made a mistake, and he's paid his dues. "He's paid so much. And I know that's not a place he would ever want to go back to. And sometimes people need support and encouragement, instead of ridicule and criticism and bashing.

Bobby Brown spends just 9 hours in jail

Los Angeles - Bobby Brown has been released from prison after spending just nine hours behind bars. The singer - the ex-husband of the late Whitney Houston - barely had time to settle into his cell following his incarceration on Wednesday morning for his third driving under the influence (DUI) conviction. Bobby checked into LA County Jail at 09:58 on Wednesday before being released at 6:58 pm because the jail was "overcrowded", reports TMZ. The star was sentenced to 55 days in prison last month after being arrested and charged for his third DUI in October. He was caught driving erratically around Los Angeles on a suspended licence, and had been arrested seven months beforehand for a similar crime. Bobby missed his original court date in February, and was ordered to attend three Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings per week until his hearing on Wednesday. The County Sheriff's spokesperson recently said he was likely to only serve nine days of his sentence - not nine hours. Bobby - who has daughter Bobbi Kristina with Whitney, and four children from other relationships - is currently on four years probation and has to attend 18 months of alcohol education classes. He and Whitney divorced in 2007 after 15 years of "stormy" and drug-filled marriage.

Chinua Achebe is no more

Chinua Achebe, the internationally celebrated Nigerian author, statesman and dissident who gave literary birth to modern Africa with Things Fall Apart and continued for decades to rewrite and reclaim the history of his native country, has died. He was 82. Mr. Achebe died following a brief illness, said his agent, Andrew Wylie. “He was also a beloved husband, father, uncle and grandfather, whose wisdom and courage are an inspiration to all who knew him,” Mr. Wylie said. As a Nigerian, Mr. Achebe lived through and helped define revolutionary change in his country, from independence to dictatorship to the disastrous war between Nigeria and the breakaway country of Biafra in the late 1960s. He knew both the prestige of serving on government commissions and the fear of being declared an enemy of the state. He spent much of his adult life in the United States, but never stopped calling for democracy in Nigeria or resisting literary honors from a government he refused to accept. Turned down by several publishers, Things Fall Apart was finally accepted by Heinemann and released in 1958 with a first printing of 2,000. Its initial review in The New York Times ran less than 500 words, but the novel soon became among the most important books of the 20th century, a universally acknowledged starting point for postcolonial, indigenous African fiction, the prophetic union of British letters and African oral culture. “It would be impossible to say how Things Fall Apart influenced African writing,” the African scholar Kwame Anthony Appiah once observed. “It would be like asking how Shakespeare influenced English writers or Pushkin influenced Russians. Achebe didn’t only play the game, he invented it.” Things Fall Apart has sold more than 8 million copies worldwide and has been translated into more than 50 languages. Mr. Achebe also was a forceful critic of Western literature about Africa, especially Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, standard reading for millions, but in Mr. Achebe’s opinion, a defining example of how even a great Western mind could reduce a foreign civilization to barbarism and menace. “Now, I grew up among very eloquent elders. In the village, or even in the church, which my father made sure we attended, there were eloquent speakers. So if you reduce that eloquence which I encountered to eight words ... it’s going to be very different,” Mr. Achebe told The Associated Press in 2008. “You know that it’s going to be a battle to turn it around, to say to people, ‘That’s not the way my people respond in this situation, by unintelligible grunts, and so on; they would speak.’ And it is that speech that I knew I wanted to be written down.” Mr. Achebe never won the Nobel Prize, which many believed he deserved, but in 2007 he did receive the Man Booker International Prize, a $120,000 honour for lifetime achievement. Mr. Achebe, paralysed from the waist down since a 1990 auto accident, lived for years in a cottage built for him on the campus of Bard College, a leading liberal arts school north of New York City where he was a faculty member. He joined Brown University in 2009 as a professor of languages and literature. ‘Two types of music’ Mr. Achebe, a native of Ogidi, Nigeria, regarded his life as a bartering between conflicting cultures. He spoke of the “two types of music” running through his mindIbo legends and the prose of Dickens. He was also exposed to different faiths. His father worked in a local missionary and was among the first in their village to convert to Christianity. In Mr. Achebe’s memoir There Was a Country, he wrote that his “whole artistic career was probably sparked by this tension between the Christian religion” of his parents and the “retreating, older religion” of his ancestors. He would observe the conflicts between his father and great uncle and ponder “the essence, the meaning, the worldview of both religions.” For much of his life, he had a sense that he was a person of special gifts who was part of an historic generation. Mr. Achebe was so avid a reader as a young man that his nickname was “Dictionary.” At Government College, Umuahia, he read Shakespeare, Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson and Jonathan Swift among others. He placed his name alongside an extraordinary range of alumni government and artistic leaders from Jaja Wachukwa, a future ambassador to the United Nations; to future Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka; Achebe’s future wife (and mother of their four children) Christine Okoli; and the poet Christopher Okigbo, a close friend of Achebe’s who was killed during the Biafra war. After graduating from the University College of Ibadan, in 1953, Achebe was a radio producer at the Nigerian Broadcasting Corp., then moved to London and worked at the British Broadcasting Corp. He was writing stories in college and called Things Fall Apart an act of “atonement” for what he says was the abandonment of traditional culture. The book’s title was taken from poet William Butler Yeats’ The Second Coming, which includes the widely quoted line, “Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold.” The opening sentence was as simple, declarative and revolutionary as a line out of Hemingway: “Okonkwo was well known throughout the nine villages and even beyond.” Africans, Mr. Achebe had announced, had their own history, their own celebrities and reputations. In mockery of all the Western books about Africa, Achebe ended with a colonial official observing Okonkwo’s fate and imagining the book he will write- “The Pacification of the Primitive Tribes of the Lower Niger.” Mr. Achebe’s novel was the opening of a long argument on his country’s behalf. “Literature is always badly served when an author’s artistic insight yields to stereotype and malice,” Mr. Achebe said during a 1998 lecture at Harvard University that cited Joyce Cary’s “Mister Johnson” as a special offender. “And it becomes doubly offensive when such a work is arrogantly proffered to you as your story. Some people may wonder if, perhaps, we were not too touchy, if we were not oversensitive. We really were not.” Mr. Achebe could be just as critical of his own country. The novels A Man of the People and No Longer at Ease were stories of corruption and collapse that anticipated the Nigerian civil war of 1967-70 and the years of mismanagement that followed. He not only supported Biafra’s independence, but was a government envoy and a member of a committee that was to write up the new and short-lived country’s constitution. He would flee from Nigeria and return many times and in 2004 refused the country’s second-highest award, the Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic, in protest over conditions under President Olusegun Obasanjo. “For some time now, I have watched events in Nigeria with alarm and dismay,” he said in an open letter to the President, referring to allegations of corruption and lawlessness in Mr. Achebe’s southeastern home state of Anambra. “A small clique of renegades, openly boasting its connections in high places, seems determined to turn my homeland into a bankrupt and lawless fiefdom. ... I had a strong belief that we would outgrow our shortcomings under leaders committed to uniting our diverse peoples.” Besides his own writing, Achebe served for years as editor of Heinemann’s “African Writer Series”, which published works by Nadine Gordimer, Stephen Biko and others. He also edited numerous anthologies of African stories, poems and essays. In There Was a Country, he considered the role of the modern African writer. “What I can say is that it was clear to many of us that an indigenous African literary renaissance was overdue,” he wrote. “A major objective was to challenge stereotypes, myths, and the image of ourselves and our continent, and to recast them through stories prose, poetry, essays, and books for our children. That was my overall goal.”

NSCDC arrests 18 students over cultism

Abeokuta - The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ogun said it arrested 18 students of two public secondary schools in the state in connection with alleged cult activities. The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the organisation, Mr Kareem Olanrewaju, told newsmen in Abeokuta on Thursday that seven of the students were arrested at Nazareth High School, Imeko, Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of the state. He said the 11 others were arrested at Lisabi High School, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta. He said the seven students were caught at Imeko while initiating some students into cultism while the 11 were apprehended on Thursday. "We also arrested eleven students of Lisabi High School, believed to be cult members, while conducting themselves in a way that breached peace in the school," he said. The NSCDC spokesman, however, said that the students would not be charged to court because of their age, saying "they are non-prosecutable". "We will not charge them to court because of their age, they are underage and cannot be prosecuted. "The command will consult with the state Ministry of Education to determine their fate." Olanrewaju urged the government to give priority to civic education in secondary schools, to reduce the level of such immorality among the youth. "We have discovered in the course of our investigation that parents are no longer contributing enough to improve the future of their children, rather, they have devoted much of the time to other  things," he said.

Platini hits out at Blatter

Berlin - Michel Platini has accused FIFA president Sepp Blatter of attacking European soccer while defending UEFA's decision to stage Euro 2020 across the continent and its right to question FIFA's reform process. UEFA's 57-year-old French president, who is likely to stand for FIFA's top job, possibly against Blatter, in 2015, was reacting to recent criticism from the FIFA president. Platini made his comments to German magazine Kicker in an interview to be published on Thursday. Although he said he got on "perfectly well" with Blatter, Platini was clearly unhappy with the 77-year-old Swiss who said last week that holding EURO 2020 in 13 cities across Europe would mean a championship "that lacks heart and soul". Platini explained that both decisions were taken after exhaustive dialogue and that 52 of UEFA's 53 members supported the idea of a pan-European championship. "At UEFA, all our major projects, such as EURO 2020 or financial fair play, are the fruit of extensive dialogue and a collective decision taken by all those involved. "I am not sure that this is how (former Libyan leader) Colonel Gaddafi did things. On the contrary, I think we are a model of what good governance should be. "An attack on EURO 2020 may well be aimed at the UEFA president but, in fact, it is really an attack on 52 out of 53 European football associations. "Everyone has the right to an opinion on UEFA projects. I have no problem with that, and I respect everyone's opinion, including, of course, that of Mr Blatter, with whom - contrary to what I have read in some places - I get on perfectly well. Our relationship is intact, even though we obviously cannot always agree on everything. "What I can say about EURO 2020 is simply that there was lengthy consultation with all those concerned, and that in the end, 52 of the 53 UEFA member association presidents enthusiastically supported this new concept, which will make EURO 2020 the first Euro with shared responsibility and solidarity - an innovative and visionary project in the eyes of many." Last month Blatter, speaking in Johannesburg, also took a swipe at UEFA saying it was attempting to block his reform process to make's soccer's world governing body more transparent and less prone to corruption. In January, UEFA rejected a proposal to limit executive committee members to two four-year mandates and called for the FIFA president to serve for a maximum of 12 years instead of the eight proposed by the reform working group, the Independent Governance Committee. Platini told Kicker: "Ultimately, the European associations unanimously support over three-quarters of the reforms proposed by FIFA. "The very few proposals that did not meet with unanimous support either had nothing to do with good governance (because they were to do with purely sports-political matters), or were simply not precise or clear enough. "In any case, it is ridiculous to accuse the European associations of being conservative, because they themselves started this reform process and have also made numerous additional reform proposals. "For example, they want people who have been convicted of corruption to be ineligible to stand at FIFA elections, and want better control and transparency of the inflow and outflow of financial payments. "These are two concrete examples, and so we will see whether or not these proposals, like those already tabled and unanimously supported by all European football associations concerning integrity checks, age limits for all and limits on the number of terms of office of the president, will also be submitted to the FIFA Congress in Mauritius (in May) and effectively put into practice."

World Bank approves $300m for affordable houses in Nigeria - Minister

The World Bank has approved $300 million for the establishment of Mortgage Re-Financing Company to facilitate the provision of affordable houses to Nigerians.  The Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Ms Ama Pepple, said this while briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja on Wednesday. The meeting was presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan Pepple, who was represented at the briefing by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Alhaji Ibrahim Mahe, said the mortgage company was being worked out by the Federal Ministry of Finance in conjunction with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).  She expressed the hope that the company, when operational, would create about 200,000 mortgages across the country. “The Minister highlighted the support that was given to the ministry or rather to the sector by the World Bank. You must have heard, I’m sure, that the World Bank is making available a credit of 300 million dollars for the establishment of Mortgage Re-Financing Company.  “That company is being worked out by the Federal Ministry of Finance in conjunction with the Central Bank of Nigeria and when it is formed eventually, the expected is that it will able to create more mortgages in the country.  “In the medium term, that company is expected to create 200,000 mortgages, in the long term, it will create much more.” The minister said that her ministry had delivered 8,069 houses in 2012. She said the ministry’s prototype housing scheme had so far produced 256 houses in three cities of the federation, adding that the ministry had also entered into partnership with private companies to build houses in Taraba, Gombe, Kano and other states.  “The ministry is also building houses and selling them through banks and the Federal Mortgage Bank. The ministry has created a Public Private Partnership unit to work in partnership with the private sector to deliver houses to the people.”   She said that N1 billion had been appropriated in the ministry’s 2013 budget for the upgrading of some urban slums in the country. Pepple said that the ministry had issued about 2,131 Certificate of Occupancy between 2011 and 2012. She said the ministry also succeeded in creating 720,228 jobs in the housing sector in 2012.  On the challenges facing the ministry, the minister listed the issues of land procurement, land compensation, poverty, proliferation of slums, shortages of houses and multiple charges and levies on prospective and owners.  She said the ministry required N2 billion for the payment of compensation to owners of land acquired for the construction of its housing scheme across the country.
