Universal sorry for Madiba obituary

Cape Town – The Universal Channel (DStv 117) apologised for erroneously broadcasting an obituary about the frail elderly statesman Nelson Mandela - entitled Remembering Madiba on Tuesday night. Universal, which is broadcast on MultiChoice's DStv pay-TV platform, says the feature about Mandela - who is very much alive - was broadcast due to a "technical error". On Tuesday night viewers reacted with shock when the Universal Channel's broadcast implied that Mandela had passed away. Universal Networks International says airing the remembrance special was premature but explained that all broadcasters have such programming ready. 'Heartfelt apology' "Like any international broadcaster, Universal Networks holds obituaries ready for every major statesman in the word," says Universal Networks International, which programmes the Universal Channel on DStv. "Universal Networks wishes to offer a sincere and heartfelt apology for the airing of such an announcement for Nelson Mandela which was broadcast last night on the Universal Channel due to a technical error by our team. "We unreservedly apologise to the Mandela family, to Universal Channel viewers and to DStv subscribers for the alarm and offence caused by this error. Our thoughts and best wishes are with Madbia and his family for a speedy and full recovery," says Universal Networks International. Mandela, 94, is spending his seventh day in a Pretoria hospital for a recurring lung infection but doctors say he is making progress.

injured Lionel Messi to undergo tests

Madrid - Barcelona will have to wait to find out the severity of the injury suffered by Lionel Messi in their 2-2 draw with Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night. The World Player of the Year put the visitors in front with a trademark left-footed finish seven minutes before half-time, but was withdrawn at the break after pulling up with a hamstring problem. "The club's medical services have informed that Leo Messi suffered an injury in his right hamstring," said a statement on the club's website. "Tests will be carried out on Wednesday to determine the exact extent of the injury." And there was more bad news for the La Liga leaders as Javier Mascherano has been ruled out for six weeks after he was stretchered off six minutes from time with a nasty-looking knee injury. "The medical services of the club confirmed at the end of the game that the Barca number 16 has suffered a tear of the internal lateral ligament in his right knee," said another statement from the club on their website. "Mascherano was injured in the second-half in an accidental clash with Jordi Alba, who fell on top of his leg. "If he completes the estimated time out of six weeks, Mascherano will arrive back just in time for the final part of the season." The former Liverpool man's absence leaves Barca short of fit defenders for the return leg at the Camp Nou next week. Carles Puyol and Adriano have already been ruled out with long-term injuries, so the inexperienced Marc Bartra or Alex Song will likely have to partner Gerard Pique in defence.

Chris Brown happier than ever with Rihanna

Los Angeles - Chris Brown and Rihanna are happier than ever. While the couple were recently reported to have called time on their stormy relationship, Chris - who is still on probation for beating Rihanna up in 2009 - insists they are still together and he is confident he will never hurt her again. Speaking on the NBC's Today, he told host Matt Lauer: "Yeah, everything's good, we're fine. Knowing that what I did was wrong, and never doing it again. So as far as me and (Rihanna) are concerned, she knows my heart, and I know her heart. So I'm not really focused on the negative." 'What I did was totally wrong' When Matt said: "You understand that if you behave badly again, you're going to damage not only your relationship, but her reputation as well," Chris replied: "Absolutely, that's why I'm moving forward, positive." Chris, 23, also said he accepts responsibility for what he did to Rihanna, 25, and had been forgiven by her. He added: "Knowing that what I did was totally wrong and having to kind of deal with myself and kind of forgive myself in the same breath and being able to say sorry to, you know, Rihanna. "I think everybody is entitled to their opinion. For me, it's just a learning process. You know, I have to just take it one day at a time. I can't make everybody like me ... it's about me being positive."

Beckham dreams of Eng return

London - David Beckham says he has not yet relinquished hope of resurrecting his England career, despite having not played for his country for almost three and a half years. The 37-year-old returned to European football with Paris Saint-Germain in January and hopes to feature in the Ligue 1 leaders' Champions League clash with Barcelona on Tuesday. Beckham's contract is due to expire at the end of the season but with PSG having expressed a desire to extend his deal, the former England captain says he still dreams of a return to the national set-up. "One of the reasons why I've never retired from the England team is because if there's ever an opportunity to play for them again, then I'm available," Beckham told CNN World Sport. "If there is any chance of me ever playing for my country again, I would never turn that down. Like I said, I'm almost 38 years old so the chances are very slight, but you never know." Beckham has won 115 England caps, a record for an outfield player, but has not featured for his country since October 2009.

Shem replaced as NSCDC Lagos Commandant

Lagos - Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, has finally replaced Obafaiye Shem, the man who postulated the “my oga at the top” mantra, as commandant of Lagos State Command. He was replaced by Adesuyi Clement from Oyo State Command. The Commandant General of NSCDC, Olu Abolurin, who was in Lagos at the weekend over the alleged killing of two of his officers by some policemen, introduced the new Commandant to journalists. But Abolurin did not give reasons for Obafaye’s removal .  Sources however hinted that the development might not be unconnected with his recent interview on Channels Television live programme. Before now, authorities of NSCDC have denied taking any disciplinary action against Shem over the said interview. Their reaction followed claims that Shem had been sacked on the orders of the Minister of Interior, who supervises the NSCDC. Shem’s travail started when he appeared on Channels Television morning programme ‘Sunrise’ and when asked the NSCDC website he said: “Hmmm, the website is, excuse me, my Oga at the top knows the website”. He again, cleared his throat and said: “My Oga at the top is working on the website and I don’t have them”. When the presenters insisted that he should give a functioning website address of the para-military outfit, he dropped the bombshell: “ww.nscdc, that’s all”. Immediately, the interview went viral and has become so popular to the extent that t-shirts with “my oga at the top” insignia has been produced and selling like hot cake across the country, even as some DJs and musicians have done what they called a remix of the phrase. Some Nollywood actors and actresses had even produced and launched a movie titled, " My oga at the top."
